Markham, ON – January 27, 2025– Evergreen Hospice is proud to announce that the Ministry of Health has allocated funding for three residential hospice beds, marking a groundbreaking achievement in our 35-year journey of serving the communities of Markham, Stouffville, and Thornhill. This milestone represents a long-anticipated dream finally realized, bringing dedicated residential palliative care to the region for the first time.
Each of the three beds comes with an annual funding allocation of approximately $150,000. This funding will directly support the clinical staffing required to provide exceptional care for individuals utilizing these beds, ensuring they receive compassionate, high-quality support during their most vulnerable moments.
“Our organization has tirelessly advocated for residential hospice beds since our establishment in 1989,” said Laura Lavallee, CEO of Evergreen Hospice and Co-Chair of the Ontario Health Team (OHT) Palliative Steering Committee. “This funding ensures that we can meet the growing demand for residential palliative care in our community while utilizing taxpayer dollars responsibly and effectively. These beds represent more than just infrastructure; they signify a commitment to providing dignity, comfort, and support to individuals and their families.”
For 35 years, Evergreen Hospice has been a steadfast resource for those navigating life-limiting illnesses, grief, and bereavement. This announcement reflects Evergreen Hospice’s ongoing growth and determination to meet the evolving needs of the communities it serves.
“We are honoured to work collaboratively with our community and local partners to bring this initiative to fruition,” Lavallee added. “Together, we will ensure these beds are utilized to their fullest potential, delivering the compassionate care that has defined Evergreen Hospice for over three decades.”
Further details regarding the implementation of the residential hospice beds and associated services will be announced in the coming months.
