Mayor Iain Lovatt and Ben Faulkes
In the summer of 2024, my family faced an incredibly challenging chapter as we lost my brother-in-law, Ben Faulkes, to Leukemia at just 31 years old. After his diagnosis relapse in February, it became painfully clear that the treatments weren’t working, and we were forced to confront the reality of losing him.
In July 2024, we made the difficult decision to bring palliative care into our home. Through our local, family doctor, we were connected with Evergreen Hospice, and that’s when everything changed for us. Dr. Patterson and Dr. Yuen, along with the entire Evergreen team, stepped in to provide support during the final days of Ben's life.
I want to express my gratitude and thanks to Evergreen on behalf of our immediate family for the support we received during the last week of Bens life.
I don’t think people quite realize the process of dying, and often times it’s something that we don’t want to talk about and we probably choose not to think about. Unfortunately, we were faced with it as a family, early in the summer, after Ben relapsed in February of this year, when his treatment was unsuccessful.
Ben’s cancer was now a more aggressive form, and we were faced with the reality that we were going to lose him. We just didn’t know when. But, the care we received from the doctors and team at Evergreen was second to none and therefore, so I want to thank them. Evergreen's support allowed us to honour Ben's life in a way that felt dignified and filled with love.
I want to personally encourage everyone to consider supporting Evergreen Hospice. Their work is crucial for families in our communities of Stouffville, Markham, and Thornhill—who are facing similar challenges. The care they provide is not just important; it’s essential. The care that Evergreen provides families going through the process of having a loved one die, is so, so important and I did not know just how important it was, until now.
I hope you will consider giving generously to Evergreen.
